End of Life
Care and Drug Questions: How Can End of Life Drug Care Help and
Hinder Patients, Staff, and Families?
Unfolding the doctrine of double effect for medications (how
medications can simultaneously help and hinder patients) and the
double state ethic of Coma Work (needing information from normal
and altered consciousness to make life and death decisions). Pain
medication and psychoactive drugs are used widely on hospice and
palliative care patients in North America. When and how do drugs
ease suffering? When and how do they exacerbate suffering? We
will explore and practice coma work, extreme state work, and other
alternatives to drugs; and combining drugs and alternatives. ~
This topic seems especially relevant in light of recent research
about ineffectiveness of antidepressant medications.
~ We will also discuss quasi euthanasia practices and explore
total pain management: physical, emotional, financial, psycho-social,
spiritual.
~For hospice staff, students, nurses, chaplains, social workers,
physicians, and other professional, family, and volunteer caregivers
tending people in states of forgetfulness, delirium, dementia,
depression, traumatic brain injury, vegetative state, coma, and
end of life situations.

to intimacy including issues around age differences and sexuality

partner is ill for some time? Are there spiritual practices that
nurture our relationship life as we age? What happens relationship-wise
